I have just completed work as Colourist on the powerful new short film ‘Natalie’ directed by Mikey Murray and starring a very talented cast including: BAFTA award winning Actress Kate Dickie, Robin Laing, Sean Scanlan, Stephen McCole, Anne Downie and Rosie MacPherson.
Working very closely with the director, the aim with the grade was to keep things subtle, and somewhat neutral and desaturated, whilst using shifts in hue to denote narrative changes.
To this end, each scene was coded to signify both geographical and emotional change as the narrative progressed from warm ambers and magentas through to greens and yellows, via blues and greys.
To counter some of these subtle but subjective colour choices, a great deal of secondary isolation was used to neutralise skin tones by bringing them closer to a ‘legal’ value on the vectorscope.
We also worked really hard to preserve the subtleties of shadows and highlights, which we hope gives the film an organic look, more akin to film stock.
